How to Market Online and Drive Targeted Traffic for Increased Conversions

I recently took part in a discussion on how businesses and brands reach out to consumers through mobile technology. By no means am I an expert on mobile marketing, so I did some research first and came across a great article on the HubSpot Blog called 10 Ways to Leverage Mobile Technology for Marketing. This was guest post by Joe Marcallini , Vice President of Internet Strategy at SteadyRain.

Each one of of the ten methods for mobile marketing that he listed is familiar to me through my ongoing eduction of everything to do with Internet marketing. I have posted Marcallini’s list below:

Mobile marketing techniques

  1. Mobile Friendly Website
  2. SMS (text) Alert/Reminders
  3. SMS Voting/Poling
  4. Mobile Commerce
  5. Mobile Applications
  6. Mobile Coupons
  7. SMS Rewards and Short Codes
  8. QR Codes
  9. Mobile Search Advertising
  10. Location Bases Services Marketing

I am aware of many others. Some of which are: email, mobile search, ads on other mobile sites, consumers sending pictures of products to companies for a discount or reward and multimedia messages. Apparently, in this revolutionary age of new mediums and technology, the imagination is the only limit to what a brand or company can do to reach out to the consumer.

How do you know which marketing concept is best?

We all know mobile usage is growing at a tremendous rate and because of this marketing on this channel is also growing tremendously. Marketing concepts in general are changing so fast it can be a bit daunting trying to keep up with it. Which is why it’s always a good idea for a business to consult with a marketing company that will advise you on the marketing strategies that will work best for your company and products.

Share your mobile marketing experiences

Do you have any examples of these mobile marketing strategies or do you know of other tactics not mentioned here?

Share them in the comments.

I recently received a comment on my Squidoo lens Free Ping Services. The person left a relevant comment about my lens and left a link pointing to their lens and asking for a visit and a like.

Comment I received:

Pinging is important, sure. But, personally, I don’t. I think I can get much more use out of my time by building backlinks. What do you think about the tips I give in the following lens?

If you like it, be sure Favorite it!

Ways to build backlinks

I did go check out the link as it is about SEO and that is something I am very interested in. Some of these suggestions are good ideas and others are outdated and spammy.

I left a comment on the lens linking to this blog post, so I can share my comment here.

My comment:

Some of these suggestions are good. However, I would suggest only creating profiles on sites you intend to use. Creating profiles on sites without the intention of sticking around and taking part of their community is considered spamming. The same is true for forum and blog posting and social bookmarking. By taking part in the community and making a difference, you will receive a much greater benefit and will not be perceived as spam.

Submitting to directories is good as long as the directory doesn’t just accept anyone. It has to have some sort of review system or guidelines. If not you could be submitting your stuff to a site on the naughty list. You would rather not have your links on all sort of pages that are blocked or could potentially be blocked by Google, the other search engines.

The best rule to follow with getting backlinks is that you will reap what you sow. Make yourself and your content useful and relevant to your audience and you will get a much greater return on your investment.

My further suggestions of using SEO to get traffic to your site or blog:

Start a blog, and a genuine social media/pr strategy and create a community around your product or business and you will leave links along the way. Better yet, those that like what you are saying will spread the word.

SEO has changed drastically in the last 3 years or so since I started marketing online. I have to tell you what was once the best thing to do is now the heading on down the list with the worst things. Currently, the best thing you can do for your SEO other than optimizing on-site is to take part in social media. Social media links are now in search results and search engines are starting to figure out how to give authors of social media a ranking or authority. We authors will then lend our authority to any link we share.

The best place to get the latest updates on SEO and the search engine algorithms is directly from the blogs of the search engines.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this? Do you have any other suggestions for good white hat SEO?

Here is the landing page I created for my fictitious viral marketing campaign for my class assignment. This landing page goes with the viral video I have posted previously about engagement rings.

Jewelry for All: Mock Landing Page for Engagement Ring Video

After Creating a viral video to promote your company/product, you need a landing page to direct the traffic to and convert them over to a customer. The landing page needs to incorporate the brand story of the company and the target audience with the information given on the company/product. A clear call to action that entices the the visitor to complete your goal(s) is very important, since you want the individuals to easily figure out what they are supposed to do when they get to the landing page.

Leave a comment and let me know if you have anything to add. I would love feedback on the landing page I created!
